There are so many books and podcasts that share valuable insight into the history of retail, its current state, and what we can expect for the future. This week, we’ve rounded up our favorite fashion-based books and podcasts that we think everyone should be reading and listening to!
1. #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
Sophia Amoruso, founder and former CEO of Nasty Gal, shares her keys to success, the ugly truths behind fighting your way to the top, and her own humorous anecdotes about her life before and after attaining her definition of “success.” Amoruso’s writing style will captivate you and keep you reading for hours. She’s blatantly honest, keeps you thinking, and will make you want to achieve every goal you’ve set for yourself as soon as you finish the last page.
2. The Fashion Book by Beth Hancock
The Fashion Book is a must have for anyone interested in fashion. Though many would probably consider it to be more of a “coffee table book” because of the sheer beauty of the book itself, it contains a lot of valuable information on the industry. This is the ultimate encyclopedia of fashion, and is hailed as the “fashion bible” by Vogue.
3. Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano by Dana Thomas
This double biography by Dana Thomas explores the lives of two of the most iconic and well-known designers of all time. It gets into the nitty gritty of what their lives were really like, their successes and failures, and what ultimately led to their demise. This is a must-read for those who want an inside look into the life-altering impacts the fashion industry had on two of the most coveted creatives in the industry.
4. The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History by Robert Givhan
This book delves into the story behind one of the most transformative nights for the fashion industry: November 28, 1973. This is the night in which five American designers battled five French designers on the runway at the Palace of Versailles. This is the incredible story of how America came out on top and changed the world of fashion forever.
5. Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion by Alan Flusser
Flusser probes the question of “Why, after men today have spent more money on clothes than in any other period of history, are there fewer well-dressed men than at any time ever before?” The book aims to explain how men should shop in order to maximize their wallet and look stylish. Though a guide to dressing well, Flusser still manages to incorporate his own sense of humor into the book to keep things interesting.
1. The Glossy Podcast
The fashion industry merges closer with the technology industry with every passing day. The Glossy Podcast fuses the two and discusses the importance of technology in the world of retail. It focuses on the impact of technology and the people who are making the change happen.
2. Girlboss Radio
After releasing her book, #GIRLBOSS, Sophia Amoruso started her own podcast in which she speaks with fellow female CEOs, business owners, and trailblazers in the industry. The conversations go beyond the surface level of their success and go deep into the struggles they endured on their way. My favorite part of this podcast is how transparent and real everyone on the podcast is. While informative, Amoruso and her guests always incorporate humor into their conversations, making you feel like you’re having a casual conversation with some of your girl friends.
3. Office Hours with College Fashionista
College Fashionista makes attending office hours bearable with this podcast. Each episode focuses on a different leader in the retail industry and how they came about their success. The conversations are honest and insightful, and will leave you feeling inspired to take hold of your own career.
4. The Business of Fashion Podcast
The Business of Fashion Podcast tells you just that! This podcast gives you your daily fix of the most current news and events happening in the fashion industry. It brings executives and creatives from over 200 countries, giving a global insight that most other fashion podcasts cannot offer. The podcast is addictive and gives you your daily rundown of the industry, so you don’t have to read through tons of articles.
5. The Barneys Podcast
The Barneys Podcast explores the creatives and connections that make up one of the most well-known retailers in the industry: Barneys New York. The podcast goes beyond just the clothes and, instead, focuses on the designers and executives that helped build the brand into what it is today. It gives unique insight into the fashion industry through interviews with iconic designers, editors-in-chief, journalists, etc.
